What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is one form of treatment for varicose and spider veins. A solution is injected into the vein causing the vein to collapse which then forces blood to healthier veins. In some forms of treatment the vein is actually removed. Removal of veins is usually performed in a doctor's office. To remove a vein, a small incision is placed near the vein and the vein is removed. Once completed, normal activity can resume after a short period of rest (usually a few hours with the leg elevated)
Once varicose veins are removed will they return?
Because no treatment is 100% certain, varicose veins can return. If obesity, standing, sitting or pregnancy are causing your varicose or spider veins, then change your lifestyle. Heredity, the main cause of varicose veins and spider veins, cannot be changed.
Can I get varicose veins from getting kicked, punched or knocked down in the legs?
No. Heredity is the primary factor in most cases. Other causes are pregnancy, obesity, standing or sitting for long periods or some restrictive clothing. Spider veins are a common occurrence from accidents in the leg areas.
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are the enlargement of the smaller veins in the body. Spider veins are usually treated with and injection of a solution into the vein. The vein then shrinks and disappears. Some spider veins can be treated with only one treatment, and often treatments are needed only once or twice a year.
What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are veins that are swollen or twisted and are most found mainly in the legs (lower and upper). The reason varicose veins become so unsightly is that they have lost their main function, which is to carry blood to flow through then. Since blood can no longer move through the veins at a speed that is consistent with the rest of the body's blood flow; the blood backs up or overfills in certain areas. Once blood overfills or backs up it causes the veins to bulge which then causes the vein to rise above the surface of the skin.
